The Lands Of Mungal

by Alex Russell

The lands of Mungal lay in the heart of the debatable lands of Malcolm Canmore and rose south from the shores of the river Carron over an ancient raised beach to a great bog north of the town of Falkirk. Much of that debate had been stifled by the swords of Norman knights and the sons of Malcolm Canmore. When the Earl David succeeded to the throne of Scotland on the death of his brother Alexander the first he reunited the lands if not the people both sides of the Carron water.

The family surname Mungal originates from the land in part of east Stirlingshire and like the land itself has seen many variations of spelling over the last 900 years. In today’s Scotland it is recalled in the names of Mungalend road, Mungalend roundabout on the A9, Mungal Place, Mungalhead road and Mungal Farm.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
